Anthropic warns it may soon reach its recursive self-improvement threshold

Anthropic warns that it’s very close to RSI capability, aka self-building AI

In an amended S-1A filing on Monday, Anthropic warned that future models may soon cross its internal threshold for recursive self-improvement (RSI). AI-assisted R&D could advance model capability faster than safety, alignment and security measures mature, the company said, and it has recognized this only after R&D sped up in the past. No model is judged to have crossed the threshold yet; Anthropic is still assessing data and may update its Responsible Scaling Policy to keep human control over frontier model development.

Why it matters: Anthropic's filing ties recursive self-improvement risk to R&D oversight, warning AI-assisted research may outpace safety work.
