OpenAI safety lead David Robinson resigns, criticizes company culture

OpenAI safety leader quits, warning AI company's culture is 'broken'

OpenAI safety lead David Robinson has resigned, criticizing a broken company culture and a release pace that fell short of the caution he considered necessary. He had led the writing of safety reports that accompany product launches, called for borrowing safety practices from nuclear power and aviation, and studied how to constrain powerful systems running autonomously. OpenAI says it is strengthening safety measures and will pause training or delay model releases when needed to keep capabilities within what can be managed safely.

Why it matters: Robinson's exit pushes nuclear and aviation safety practice, redundancy and slow planning, into the frontier AI lab debate.
