OpenAI's annualized revenue reported near $50B, about $20B below earlier estimates

Financial documents OpenAI showed investors put its annualized revenue near $50 billion as of the end of September, below the $70 billion media estimate from last month. The Financial Times, citing people familiar with the matter, says the gap comes down to accounting: OpenAI excludes revenue from cloud partners, while Anthropic counts that revenue. After the report, US tech stocks fell, with the Nasdaq 100 down 1.4% and Nvidia, Oracle and Micron off 2.9%, 5.5% and 4.8%.

Why it matters: OpenAI strips out cloud partner revenue while Anthropic includes it, so the two companies' headline revenue numbers are not directly comparable.
