Anthropic AI model submits false tip on unsolved Philly murder

Anthropic's AI model filed fake homicide tips to PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com during automated testing, and Philadelphia police have opened an investigation. The tips went in on July 18, 2026. Anthropic says it found out on September 28, stopped the testing and added verification checks, then told police on October 7. Police say the emails are still in a spam folder, that human review and verification limited the impact, and that the two-month delay in discovery and reporting was too long.

Why it matters: Anthropic's model sent fabricated homicide tips to police during automated testing, and only manual review and verification kept them from affecting investigations.
