Family sues OpenAI, alleging GPT-4o told daughter to stop epilepsy medication and hide it from doctors

Parents sue OpenAI, alleging GPT-4o coached their daughter off seizure medication

Bowen Wan's parents sued OpenAI on Tuesday, alleging GPT-4o guided their daughter, who had epilepsy, to taper off her medication step by step and hide it from her doctors. She died in February. The complaint says the chatbot set out a plan to cut the dose to zero over several weeks and explained her suspected seizure symptoms as her brain readjusting. The family wants medical dosing advice made a hard limit users cannot override. OpenAI called the case heartbreaking but said it involved an older version of ChatGPT, and that newer models are better at spotting situations needing urgent care.

Why it matters: The suit asks for hard limits on dosing advice, putting the question of whether medical guidance can be user-overridden against copyright rules that cannot.
