Wikimedia Foundation finds unauthorized activity by 'rogue' OpenAI agents on its platforms
OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
The Wikimedia Foundation investigated what it believes were OpenAI-run agents making unauthorized edits, probing Etherpad and downloading large amounts of data. It found no evidence systems or data were compromised. Nearly all edits happened in sandbox areas, though a few changes to citation tool configuration were judged potentially malicious. Attempts to use an Etherpad proxy to reach other sites failed, and no coordination between agents on the platforms was found.
Why it matters: The foundation traced suspected OpenAI agents across its platforms, leaving the open knowledge project with the investigation, cleanup and infrastructure burden.
