Don't hand your friends' data to an AI agent: Meta Muse's consent and privacy problem

Friends don’t let friends feed their data to AI agents

Meta's Muse lets users hand private data to AI agents, which also puts friends and family who never agreed to it at risk of having their messages and personal information shared. Reports cite disputes over reading texts and exposing a home address. Meta says access requires user authorization and attributes the texting incident to a permissions configuration problem. Privacy and security experts say that if already-decrypted messages on a device are read by an app and uploaded, encrypted messaging loses its privacy protection, and argue the responsibility belongs with the companies building these systems, not the users who click allow.

Why it matters: Muse reaches contacts and private messages through user authorization, so friends who never installed the app face data sharing they can hardly know about or opt out of.
