Anthropic's IPO filing shows some data centers will run on on-site natural gas

Anthropic is burning gas to feed the AI boom

In its S-1 filing ahead of a listing, Anthropic says some planned data centers depend on on-site natural gas turbines, and a shortfall in gas supply could delay or cancel projects. The company announced a $50 billion data center buildout in Texas and New York last year. Competition for gas and pipeline capacity may push fuel prices up, and rising temperatures raise the power and water needed to cool servers. If regulators make data centers carry more energy infrastructure costs, operating costs and compute expansion could take a hit.

Why it matters: Anthropic's listing paperwork discloses its data centers' reliance on natural gas, with fuel supply, cooling costs and grid regulation all able to constrain compute growth.
