Researchers alarmed by new Anthropic report on automating AI R&D

Why a new report on Anthropic automating AI development is alarming researchers

METR's 11-week study of Anthropic found its models improving about twice as fast as a year earlier. METR judges that by October most of the acceleration came from AI, now mainly AI helping human researchers. Staff using the strongest internal models reported productivity about 12 times higher than without AI help.

Why it matters: Anthropic cut most of the evidence researchers consider important from METR's report, making it harder for the public to check the acceleration claim and its uncertainty.
