OpenAI deliberately kept the tech story small: study mode is available to Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users, and it runs on custom system instructions. The behaviors are Socratic prompts, scaffolded hints, knowledge checks, memory-aware personalization, and an off switch. That is the right constraint for schools: the fear is not that ChatGPT cannot explain homework, but that it finishes homework too well.

I don’t buy the “real learning” claim yet. The post offers student anecdotes, including a 3-hour session on sinusoidal positional encodings, but gives no outcome metrics, retention data, cheating-bypass rate, or underlying model. Compared with Khanmigo-style education products, OpenAI has the distribution advantage and a thinner assessment loop. Without teacher dashboards or course integration, study mode is classroom manners layered onto ChatGPT.
