Mojo 1.0 is now open source under Apache 2.0, alongside Modular Cloud and new silicon support

The Mojo language (by Modular, now Qualcomm) is now open-source

At ModCon 2026, Modular open-sourced Mojo 1.0 under Apache 2.0 and made Modular Cloud publicly available, already serving customers like MiniMax. The platform now supports AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 and Dragonfly accelerators. Mojo is getting native Windows support via a Microsoft collaboration. MAX drops device usage restrictions and moves to source-available with an open alliance program.

Why it matters: Mojo going open source is a real infra-level event — Apache 2.0 removes the biggest commercial adoption blocker. Score isn't higher because this is still an announcement; we haven't seen community traction or migration data yet. 78 feels right for now.

This one's worth opening because it's Modular's first full roadmap since the Qualcomm acquisition, and they went all-in on openness: Mojo 1.0 under Apache 2.0, MAX dropping its device usage restrictions, and Modular Cloud now publicly available with MiniMax already onboard.

Mojo's been called "open-source-ish" for two years. Apache 2.0 changes that — compiler, standard library, the whole thing, no commercial strings attached. Microsoft is collaborating on native Windows support, which is a concrete signal for teams that want Python-ecosystem code with systems-level performance.

The hardware list is broad: AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 and Dragonfly accelerators. I'd discount this a bit — the post says "support" but doesn't clarify whether that means production-ready today or roadmap. Still, it shows Modular isn't locking itself to Qualcomm silicon.

MAX removing device restrictions is easy to miss but matters more for commercial users than the Mojo license change. Previously you'd need separate deals for certain hardware deployments; now it's just open. The bigger story: Modular is shifting from "sell compiler/runtime licenses" to "cloud revenue, free toolchain."
