The HP Laser 1008a is a rebadged Samsung that speaks SPL3, a raster language with zero macOS driver support and no AirPrint—plug it into a Mac and it's a brick. The author spent ~4 hours with Claude Code (Opus 4.8, 1M context) going from a generic driver hanging at "connecting-to-device" to reading the printer's own error pages to decode SPL3 commands, bypassing the macOS USB sandbox to talk directly to the device, running HP's real rastertospl codec inside a Linux container to produce genuine SPL3 streams, and finally shipping a reboot-safe daemon with a one-command MIT-licensed installer.
