He had Claude instrument SQLite 3.51.2 with assertions and write a concurrent read/write workload; Antithesis reproduced the data-loss bug in 15 minutes. The same workload ran clean on 3.51.3. Tailscale had spent six months chasing this bug, building new logging pipelines and a VFS debugging shim to root-cause it. The contrast here is what makes this worth reading. Tailscale spent six months chasing this WAL-Reset race condition, building new logging pipelines and a VFS debugging shim just to root-cause it. Carl Sverre at Antithesis read about the fix while on vacation, pulled out his phone, and had Claude instrument the buggy SQLite 3.51.2 with assertions and write a concurrent read/write workload. I'd discount this a bit since the post doesn't disclose Antithesis pricing, and the SQLite team themselves noted the bug has tight timing constraints — it's not something you'd hit by accident. But the useful bit isn't the bug itself. It's the workflow: a knowledgeable engineer plus an AI agent plus a deterministic simulation platform compressed months of environment setup and tooling into under an hour. Tailscale's own postmortem is worth reading alongside this one. Seeing both sides makes the cost boundaries between traditional debugging and this approach much clearer.
