The reason to click: Databricks separated the model from the harness and found the harness matters a lot. Same Opus 4.8 model, same thinking effort—Pi hit the highest pass rate while sending ~3x less context per turn and finishing tasks in fewer runs. Total cost dropped sharply. That runs counter to the instinct that heavier frameworks do better.

Pi's bet is extreme: 4 tools, a system prompt under 1,000 tokens. The logic is that frontier models now handle terminal environments well on their own, so the harness should stay out of the way.
