I clicked on this because Apple and OpenAI's partnership is turning into a public legal fight. On July 17, Apple sent preservation letters directly to dozens of OpenAI employees — not to the company, to individuals. That tells me Apple is building an evidence trail, trying to prove OpenAI misused Apple's proprietary info when training its own models.

Two things the FT piece doesn't spell out: which employees got the letters, and the exact scope of data Apple wants preserved. I'd discount this a bit — preservation letters are standard litigation procedure, not a smoking gun. But sending them to dozens of people is a real signal that Apple is serious about discovery.
