Cloudflare moves machine-traffic payments to the edge gateway

Cloudflare launched Monetization Gateway on July 1, 2026, letting sites, APIs, and MCP tools charge per machine request. It returns HTTP 402 with a price quote; agents pay via the x402 protocol using stablecoins, with verification and settlement handled at Cloudflare's edge. This expands beyond the earlier Pay Per Crawl product to cover any machine request. The post notes x402 handles pricing and payment but not authorization, disputes, or bot detection—those fall to Google AP2, Mastercard verifiable intent, and Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol. Real-time data, specialized databases, and high-trust execution tools are most likely to attract agent payments; generic web content is hard to monetize.
