OpenAI is not just reviving plugins; it is rebuilding an app store where the model controls intent capture. The first wave has seven partners: Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow. Access covers logged-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users, excluding the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. The Apps SDK is open source and built on MCP, with testing through Developer Mode.

I don’t buy the “open ecosystem” framing yet. The post says submissions and monetization details come later this year, but gives no review rules, listing mechanics, ranking policy, or revenue share. “800 million ChatGPT users” is a huge pitch, but if ChatGPT suggests apps inside the conversation, placement becomes the product. MCP solves connection plumbing. It does not solve platform rent, default capture, or the risk that ChatGPT keeps the user while the app becomes a widget.
