Atlas is an entry-point grab, not a cute “ChatGPT inside a browser” launch. OpenAI shipped it on October 21, 2025, first on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users. Agent mode preview is gated to Plus, Pro, and Business. That split is blunt: free users build browsing habits; paid users test task execution.

The sensitive part is browser memories plus page-visibility controls. Web content is excluded from training by default, memories can be viewed or archived, and deleting browsing history deletes linked memories. That is OpenAI preempting the privacy backlash a Chrome-scale surface invites. Perplexity Comet already pushed the AI-browser story, but OpenAI has ChatGPT login state and subscriptions attached.
