A Reddit user reverse-engineered Claude Code starting from v2.1.91 and found it runs a silent classifier: it checks whether your timezone is Asia/Shanghai or Asia/Urumqi, inspects proxy domains against a China-related list, then encodes the result into the system prompt by swapping the apostrophe in "Today's" with one of four visually identical Unicode variants. No data is uploaded — it's 2-bit steganography baked into the prompt. Multiple group members got banned the same day; a reseller said Anthropic was specifically targeting Alibaba-linked accounts.

I'd connect this to the Fable 5 "stealth downgrade" disclosure from two days ago. Anthropic's tightening on China-based users is now moving from the model layer to the client layer. The analysis post nailed the real issue: a coding assistant with filesystem and shell access that can silently modify prompts and hide detection logic means the trust boundary is already broken. That's the part that stings more than the bans themselves.

Sonnet 5 launched the same day at $2/$10 per million tokens, replacing Sonnet 4.6 as the default. But it uses a new tokenizer that inflates token counts, so the lower unit price doesn't mean lower total cost. One user reported it was so slow they couldn't even spend their tokens.
