US export control blocks online API access for the first time: Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 suspended

This one matters because the target shifted: not chips, not model weights, but the input box on a webpage. Anthropic launched Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 9. Two days later, Commerce Secretary Lutnick sent an export control directive cutting off all foreign national access, including Anthropic's own foreign employees. Anthropic shut both models down entirely.

The government disclosed no technical evidence. Anthropic says the jailbreak demo it saw involved minor known vulnerabilities that other public models can also do. But the order came with no appeals window, no risk tiering—nothing like the layered framework used for chip controls.

The real story isn't government overreach vs. Anthropic asking for it. Both can be true at once. Anthropic spent two years pushing for government safety intervention, from SB 1047 to custom models for nuclear labs. It already turned compliance into infrastructure. When the government finally acted, however bluntly, Anthropic was the company best positioned to absorb the hit.

For developers, model selection just gained a fifth dimension: access surface. Can your team members in certain countries use it? Will a foreign national customer trigger restrictions? Does the vendor have a fallback plan or just a kill switch? These weren't questions before. They are now.
