vinext is not scary because one engineer cloned Next.js in a week. It is scary because 94% API coverage turns compatibility into a test-passing exercise. The reported numbers are brutal: $1,100 in token spend, production Next.js apps running, 4x faster builds, and 57% smaller client bundles. I’d still discount the benchmark until third parties rerun it, but the cost curve is the point.

The SQLite comparison lands: 156k lines of code, 92.05M lines of tests, and TH3 kept closed. Tests define the behavioral boundary competitors need to copy. That makes Vercel’s problem awkward: Next.js won by publishing interfaces, docs, examples, and tests. Those same assets now give model-assisted clones a spec to target. The defensive move is ugly for open source: keep the code open, hide the conformance suite.
