Take

Opus 4.8 is less a raw-intelligence flex than a cost-control move for agent workloads. The same-price upgrade is table stakes. The sharper hook is fast mode: 2.5× speed, now three times cheaper than previous models. Pair that with user-controlled effort on claude.ai and dynamic workflows in Claude Code, and Anthropic is aiming at the bill shock from long-running tool loops.

The eval story still needs discounting. The main comparison table is an image, so the post does not expose reproducible scores there. The quoted partner numbers are stronger: 84% on Online-Mind2Web, the first model above 10% overall on a legal all-pass benchmark, and a Super-Agent claim against GPT-5.5 at cost parity. Anthropic is very good at selling “better judgment.” Until task sets and failures are public, I read this as a strong agent-product iteration, not a clean model-generation jump.
