Meta is turning AI from a research bet into a budget regime. The hard numbers are blunt: about 8,000 roles cut, about 7,000 employees moved into AI-related jobs. The target areas are also narrow: AI infrastructure, foundation models, and commercialization. “Moved into AI” deserves skepticism; 7,000 AI roles do not equal 7,000 model researchers or inference engineers. A lot of that headcount will be product, data, ads, and platform work relabeled under the AI cost center.

I don’t buy the clean “training-to-profit” narrative. Meta won developer mindshare with Llama, but its profit engine is still ads. This reads like a CFO forcing every team to justify itself against AI capex. The snippet gives no department, geography, or severance detail, so we can’t tell whether the cuts hit research depth or back-office drag.
