Meta is betting on the trust gap, not a better chat UI. Incognito Chat claims inference runs inside the phone’s hardware secure enclave, with no plaintext access for Meta engineers, no server logs, and permanent deletion after the session. That is a harder privacy boundary than ChatGPT temporary chats, where inference still runs server-side.

I’m not ready to buy the “fully on-phone inference” framing. The snippet gives no model size, device requirements, context limits, or cloud fallback behavior. Those details decide whether this is a serious private assistant or a narrow safe-mode wrapper. WhatsApp distribution is the scary part: at 3B-user scale, private AI can become a default expectation fast. But if the feature only runs small models or constrained tasks, Meta is selling a privacy posture before it has proven general assistant parity.
